Program Summary

Beginning in Fall 2026, Reflections on Lawyering will be available to all Full-time JD co-op students, regardless of employer type. Students completing co-ops with law firms and corporate employers will now have the same opportunity to enroll in Reflections that has previously been available only to those working with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and judges. Full-time JD students who participate in Reflections on Lawyering can earn a total of 8 academic credits during their co-op term: 1 credit for the asynchronous course and 7 credits for the co-op work itself through the Public Interest/Public Service Field Placement program (this is a catalog naming holdover only).

FlexJD students who participate can earn 6 field placement credits (tied to completion of co-op) and 2 credits for the co-requisite, asynchronous seminar with weekly assignments. Since Reflections is required for graduation for FlexJD students, all co-op employers are eligible for them.

For all eligible students, if you receive a grade of FAIL or withdraw from the asynchronous seminar, you will receive zero credits for the seminar and zero credits for the field placement. This opportunity is designed to enhance the co-op experience, which is central to the NUSL curriculum.

FlexJD candidates

• All Co-op Employers are eligible**:**
  • 6 field placement credits (tied to completion of co-op)
  • 2 credits for the co-requisite asynchronous seminar with weekly assignments.

REGISTRATION

On Tuesday, July 21 or Wednesday, July 22, if you plan to participate in Reflections, you will need to register for the following:

• One section of LAW 7940, Reflections on Lawyering (1 credit hour), an asynchronous course with weekly assignments to be submitted weekly and on time; and
• LAW 7941 (7 credit hours), which is a corequisite to LAW 7940. This is the field placement for your co-op.

(You may notice that LAW 7941 is still listed under its former title, "Public Interest / Public Service Field Placement" — this is a catalog naming holdover only. The course itself is open to all eligible co-op placements, regardless of employer type.)

Since these are corequisites, if you do not register for both courses, you will receive academic credit for neither. Detailed **registration instructions** can be found on the Registrar's website.
